Storing Natural Deodorant: Heat, Cold and 12M
Why an oil-and-butter stick softens in a warm room, what Wild, Fussy and Native actually publish about storage and shelf life, and what 12M obliges.
A deodorant that has gone soft, greasy, rock hard or grainy looks like a faulty product. For the sticks covered on this site it usually is not. It is what an ingredient list built on plant oils and butters does when the temperature changes.
This page sets out two things: what the published ingredient data says about why that happens, and what the brands themselves publish about storing their products and how long they keep. Those are narrower than the advice you will find elsewhere, and the gap is deliberate — where a brand publishes nothing, this page says so rather than filling it in.
Why an oil-and-butter stick softens
Both refillable sticks we cover most closely are built on plant oils, butters and wax.
Wild’s published ingredient list for its classic refill, on Wild’s own deodorant page, reads: “Tapioca Starch, Baking Soda (not in the sensitive range), Sunflower Seed Wax, Cocoa Seed Butter, Tocopherol Acetate, Capric Glycerides, Coconut Oil, Stearyl Alcohol, Triethyl Citrate, Sunflower Seed Oil, Shea Butter, Magnesium Hydroxide, Zinc Ricinoleate, Rice Starch (only in the sensitive range), plus fragrance.”
Fussy’s published base list, on Fussy’s own ingredients article, reads: “Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride, Coconut Oil, Tapioca, Sunflower Seed Wax, Sodium Bicarbonate, Magnesium Hydroxide, Shea Butter, Lactobacillus Ferment.”
Coconut oil and shea butter appear in both. Two published figures explain the behaviour readers notice:
- The Cosmetic Ingredient Review Expert Panel’s amended safety assessment of Cocos Nucifera (Coconut) Oil (final report, 23 September 2008) gives coconut oil a melting range of 21–25 °C in its table of physical properties, and describes the oil as “a pale yellow, semi-solid, edible oil that is stable in air at room temperature.”
- The same panel’s safety assessment of Butyrospermum parkii (Shea)-derived ingredients (amended tentative report, 28 April 2017) gives shea butter “a melting point of 37.8 ˚C (reported range: 28-46 ˚C).”
A comfortably warm room is already inside coconut oil’s published melting range. That is the short answer to why a stick that behaved perfectly in March drags and smears in July.
One limit on those numbers, and it matters. Both figures describe the raw ingredient, not the finished stick. A stick is a blend — starch, wax and butter alongside the oil — and it will not behave like any single component. Neither Wild nor Fussy publishes a melting point for the finished product, so 21–25 °C is not the temperature at which your deodorant fails. It is the reason the formula is temperature-sensitive at all.
What the brands publish about storage
Less than you would expect.
Native publishes storage guidance in the FAQ on its US site: “we recommend you store your deodorants in a cool, dry place :)”, and “Our ingredients allow our deodorant to withstand temperatures up to 90 degrees Fahrenheit.” That is Native’s statement about Native’s product on Native’s US site. Native is a US brand, and US and UK listings differ in size and sometimes in ingredients, so treat the 90 °F figure (about 32 °C) as what Native tells its US customers rather than a UK specification.
Wild runs a support article titled “How should I store my refills?” at support.wearewild.com. An automated fetch of that page returned HTTP 403 on 13 September 2026, and the help centre’s front page returned 403 as well. Wild’s figures are therefore not quoted here at all. If you want Wild’s own storage guidance, open that link in a browser and read it from Wild. Wild’s deodorant product page does answer, and it states “Each refill weighs 40g which will last around 4-6 weeks with daily use” — but it carries no storage, temperature or shelf-life guidance.
Fussy publishes no storage temperature and no sunlight guidance in either of its help-centre articles on refill expiry or how to use the deodorant. That is not an oversight on our part — the guidance is not there.
So: one brand says “cool, dry place” and gives a temperature for its US product, one has guidance we could not read, and one publishes none.
Softened, rock hard or dragging
No brand covered here publishes a recovery procedure for a stick that has already melted or set hard. None is invented on this page — a fix with no source behind it is a guess, and a guess about a product against your skin is not worth making.
What is published is about application rather than rescue. Fussy’s own guidance is “We recommend only using 1-2 swipes on clean, dry armpits.” A stick that drags tempts you to press harder and use more, which is the opposite of what the brand recommends and is the same over-application problem covered in how long deodorant lasts.

Where to keep it
The only storage instruction any covered brand publishes is Native’s “cool, dry place”, on its US site. That is thin, but it points the same way as the melting figures above: the problem is warmth and direct sun, not humidity or age on its own.
Two places readers mention repeatedly are a bathroom windowsill in direct sunlight and a car glovebox in summer. Neither is a temperature this page can put a number on, and no brand publishes one for those conditions. The published melting range for coconut oil is simply low enough that “somewhere cool and out of the sun” is doing real work rather than being boilerplate.
How long it actually keeps
This is where the generic advice goes wrong, and it is worth being precise, because the figures differ by brand and each one has an owner.
Fussy states: “All of our products are free from parabens and chemical preservatives so we recommend that you use your deodorant within 12 months of receiving it.” (Fussy’s help centre)
Native states, on its US FAQ: “Our deodorants have a shelf life of two years.” Again, US site, US product.
Wild — not quoted. The support article that would answer this returned 403, as above, and nothing on Wild’s product page states a shelf life. Wild’s figure is not inferred from Fussy’s, and it should not be inferred from Fussy’s anywhere else either.
Two brands, two different published figures, twelve months apart. That is the point: there is no single shelf life for “natural deodorant”, and a page that gives you one number for the whole category is not reading the brands.
Reading the pack: what “12M” means, and what it does not
The small open-jar symbol with a number and an M beside it is the period-after- opening mark. In the UK it comes from Article 19(1)(c) of Regulation (EC) No 1223/2009 as retained in UK law (legislation.gov.uk).
The regulation requires the label to carry “the date until which the cosmetic product, stored under appropriate conditions, will continue to fulfil its initial function”. It then says: “Indication of the date of minimum durability shall not be mandatory for cosmetic products with a minimum durability of more than 30 months.” Those products instead show “the period of time after opening for which the product is safe and can be used without any harm to the consumer”, indicated “by the symbol shown in point 2 of Annex VII followed by the period (in months and/or years)”.
Three things follow, and they are the parts usually left out:
- 12M is a clock that starts when you open it, not when it was made and not when it arrived. A sealed spare does not spend its 12M sitting in a cupboard.
- Fussy’s twelve months is a different clock. Fussy’s wording is “within 12 months of receiving it” — from receipt, not from opening. A 12M symbol and a brand’s own twelve-month recommendation are not the same statement, even when the number matches.
- No symbol does not mean no limit. The open-jar mark is only required where minimum durability is more than 30 months. A product that keeps for 30 months or less carries a date of minimum durability instead.
What this page does not tell you is what any particular brand prints on its pack, because we have not read one. Check yours.
Travel and heat
A stick in a suitcase in a hold, or left in a car, is in exactly the conditions the melting figures above describe, and no brand covered here publishes travel guidance. Two things are worth knowing rather than guessing at: a refillable system means you can travel with a case and a single refill rather than the whole supply, and a softened refill is a mess inside a bag as well as inside its case.
FAQ
Is a melted stick still usable?
No brand covered here publishes an answer we could read, and this page does not supply one. What exists is the labelling law above, Fussy’s recommendation to use its product within twelve months of receiving it, and Native’s two-year shelf life and “cool, dry place” guidance on its US site. Whether a specific product in a specific state is fine to keep using is a question for the brand that made it — all three run a support channel — not for us.
Does melting stop a deodorant working?
Nothing published by Wild, Fussy or Native addresses this, and no study is cited here because none was found that tests it. Anyone telling you confidently either way is not citing the brands.
Can I put a melted refill in the fridge?
Wild has a support article on storing refills that may answer this. It returned 403 to an automated fetch on 13 September 2026, so it is linked above rather than quoted, and no fridge time or temperature is stated here. Read it from Wild.
Is this a problem antiperspirants have?
Out of scope for this page. Note only that a deodorant and an antiperspirant do different jobs — a deodorant addresses odour and does not reduce sweat — and that deodorant versus antiperspirant covers the difference.
The short version
- Coconut oil’s published melting range is 21–25 °C and shea butter’s melting point is given as 37.8 °C with a reported range of 28–46 °C, both per the Cosmetic Ingredient Review. Both are in Wild’s and Fussy’s published lists.
- Those figures are for the raw ingredients. Neither brand publishes one for the finished stick.
- Native’s US FAQ says cool and dry, and up to 90 °F. Fussy publishes no storage guidance. Wild’s storage article could not be opened and is not quoted here.
- Fussy says twelve months from receiving. Native’s US FAQ says a two-year shelf life. Wild’s figure is not quoted.
- 12M means twelve months after opening, and it is only required where minimum durability exceeds 30 months.
